Wi-Fi in Schools – Health Risk Concerns

Is WiFi Safe? This is the question on the minds of many parents in Australia whose children attend schools that have rolled out WiFi in their classrooms.

Building biologist Nicole Bijlsma warns about the health impacts of radio frequencies from wireless devices upon children.  Meanwhile, one primary school in South Australia has installed wired internet in reaction to reports of health problems from WiFi.

United Energy backflips (again)

Earlier in the year United Energy seemed to have accepted that its customers have the right not to accept installation of smart meters.  They sent a letter to their customers stating “….we honour your request not to have a smart meter installed…” and “We have now removed the meter at your property from United Energy’s smart meter exchange program.” See: https://stopsmartmeters.com.au/2014/02/05/united-energy-first-power-distributor-in-victoria-to-acknowledge-peoples-rights/

However, recently, United Energy sent letters to the same customers stating that they “must have the existing meter replaced with a smart meter.”  This letter was enclosed in a package along with numerous documents and colourful brochures (a.k.a propaganda) promoting the ‘benefits’ of smart meters.

Stop Smart Meters Australia received a copy of a letter responding to United Energy’s latest harassment.  We believe this letter is worth sharing: Letter to UE

Remember, United Energy is the same company that cut Sofia Telemzouguer’s power, agreed to reinstate it, and then reneged.  Is it any surprise that this same company back flips and demands that customers accept the installation of smart meters against their will, and for some, against medical advice?

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) health complaints soar in Victoria

ARPANSA (Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency) commenced Australia’s first centralised EMR Health Complaints Register on 4 July 2003. The Register collects reports of health concerns related to possible EMR field exposures in the range of 0-300 GHz.

Out of a total of 91 reports received up until June 2013, 36 (40%) were received in the 2012 – 2013 reporting period alone. Moreover, 78% of the reports for the July 2012 – June 2013 period came from just one state – Victoria.

No prizes for guessing as to what appears to be behind this massive spike. The leading EMR source reported as causing health effects during this period was smart meters. Go to https://www.arpansa.gov.au/sites/g/files/net3086/f/legacy/pubs/emr/analysis12-13.pdf to see the breakdown and the health effects that people are reporting.

What will the July 2013 – June 2014 reporting period reveal?

Click on https://stopsmartmeters.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/arpansa-report-form.doc, print out the form, fill in and mail to ARPANSA if you want to add your own report to this year’s statistics. There is always the chance, if enough people take the time to report their symptoms, that research will, finally, be undertaken into the health effects resulting from the roll-out of smart meters.

Wi-Fi – “The Government admits it can’t be 100% sure there are no longterm health risks” – Ch 7 News

Scientists fear Wi-FI is damaging our health. Pippa Gardner from Ch 7 reports:

https://au.news.yahoo.com/video/watch/24259747/is-wi-fi-bad-for-our-health/

Summary of this news item:

Wi-Fi health risks?

Pippa Gardner 7 News, Sydney, June 17, 2014, 6:12 pm

Wi-Fi has revolutionised the way we work, learn and live.

While the radiation waves it emits are very low, some scientists fear it is damaging our health, and we will not know the full effects for generations to come.

And they now want government standards reviewed before it is too late.

James McCaughan is a former physics lecturer, and he believes he developed Wi-Fi sensitivity after constant exposure from smart phones in lecture rooms.

“I’d say it’s like sunburn,” he said.

“Some people have got fair skin and they’re very sensitive to sunburn and you come out of the sun and your skin is still radiating and I think it’s like that your brain once it’s been sensitized is just burning.

“I knew I couldn’t go back in that room again so I just said look I can’t continue teaching, please accept my resignation”

Wi-Fi is almost impossible to avoid.

A former NASA scientist mapped transmission waves across Washington DC. The city is immersed.

The concern is that Wi-Fi emits low levels of radiation similar to mobile phones.

Australian Wi-Fi safety guidelines were last updated ten years ago, well before smart phones, tablets and the rollout of wireless internet in schools. Because the technology is so new even the government admits it cannot be 100 per cent sure there are no long term health risks, particularly for children.

Many schools use industrial Wi-Fi, which transmits at the same level as a phone tower.

In France and England, some schools have switched to wired internet because of safety concerns.

I suddenly became ill with excruciating headaches, pains….

13 months ago I suddenly became ill with excruciating headaches, pains like electricity going through me, & nausea – on the exact date the smart meter rollout reached homes near me. I didn’t find out until weeks later what hit me as I’d never heard of the smart meter health issue before. As my symptoms matched no condition I’d ever heard of as a healthcare professional – I googled my symptoms & they exactly matched the classic symptoms of electromagnetic sensitivity (EMS).

Only later did I find out the rollout had begun in my area. I found an unusually bright GP who already understood EMS and I had blood tests, a brain & sinus MRI, specialist referral, etc. to rule out other conditions. My GP told me I’m not imagining this condition. Where do I go from here? I’m told I’d make a very credible witness & have quite a story to tell.

The head of Belgium’s largest mobile phone company bans WiFi in his offices and tells kids mobile phones are dangerous!

It really appears that the cat is now out of the bag when the head of a large mobile phone company bans WiFi in his offices and warns children about the dangers of mobile phones.

Didier Bellens, president of Belgacom, (Belgium’s largest mobile phone company) is a brave man. While most telecommunications companies and mobile phone manufacturers are still actively denying the dangers of microwave radiation, here is a man who asks his contacts to call him on his land-line rather than his mobile phone and who tells children to use a headset with their mobile phone and to turn them off at night.

It is amazing Didier Bellens has kept his job!

Canberra neurosurgeon writes about smart meters…

Here is what Dr Vini G. Khurana MBBS (Syd, Hons), BScMed (Syd, Hons), PhD (Mayo Clinic), FRACS, neurosurgeon from Canberra, thinks about wireless smart meters:

The Australian electrical utility company Citipower (Powercor) is currently rolling out “smart meters” in Australian homes. There are public concerns regarding possible health effects that such a device might have via continuous near-field electromagnetic radiation emissions (especially if situated near bed-heads and family and childrens’ rooms). Info about smart meter health and safety issues via Citipower’s own brochure (CLICK HERE) appears inadequate based on information gathered from experts elsewhere (see links below). Regarding smart meters:

    1. There does not appear to be any real benefit for consumers/households and no “green” benefit either
    2. Financial benefits following installation appear to be exclusively for power companies
    3. DETRIMENTAL effects for consumers appear to be (i) a substantial rise in household utility bills; (ii) possible adverse neurological effects in people who sustain close proximity to the meters (especially < 10 feet/3 metres); (iii) invaded personal privacy via third parties obtaining information about household occupancy patterns gleaned from time-specific utility usage data, (iv) impending additional wireless meter installations for gas, water, television and communication devices etc.
    • A generic letter received from Citipower (CLICK HERE). Note the asterisked section on page 2 of the letter; the statement is inaccurate – how can this electrical radiotransmitter device have no electromagnetic field? The device emits throughout the day and night…but:
      • what are the exact signal strengths?
      • when exactly/how frequently is it transmitting back-to-base?
      • what is the EMF plume (distant-dependent EM field) of the meter itself when not transmitting (i.e., “at rest”) versus when transmitting?
      • Why can’t they be hard-wired instead and shouldn’t their ‘boxes’ be EMF-shielded by the Utility company?
    • The above fundamental questions need to be addressed.

New legislation urgently needed for safety of new metering systems

Richard H Conrad, who is based in Hawaii and has a PhD in biochemistry, has written an excellent document for legislators of wireless smart meters.

As American FCC (Federal Communications Commission) guidelines for human exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields are based on the same outdated premises as the Australian standard, this document could be used as a basis to write to Australian legislators. The FCC’s regulations, similar to Australian regulations, “protect only against gross overheating and do not protect from biological harm caused by low (‘non-thermal’) levels of microwaves”.

Dr Conrad also discusses how the dangers associated with creating perpetually hackable wireless mesh networks which provide a tapping device on every home, can be used as a potential weapon of mass debilitation and contain a power cut-off switch to every home.

People Power Victoria political party update

Following the announcement of the formation of Victoria’s newest political party ‘People Power Victoria – No Smart Meters’ (PPV) we were inundated with membership applications. Within the first few weeks we were receiving an average of 150 membership applications per week, and thus once we passed the 500 members mark (after only 4 weeks!) we lodged our application to formally register as a party with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC).

As part of the registration process, PPV members have received a letter this week from the VEC requesting they confirm their party membership. All members will need to tick the appropriate boxes and send the form back in the supplied reply paid envelope.

It is imperative that members respond promptly by mailing back their confirmation as soon as possible. Failure to return confirmation forms to the VEC may result in our party’s registration being unsuccessful.

Once the party is officially registered, applications will open for members interested in running as candidates for PPV in the forthcoming Victorian elections. But firstly, all members will need to promptly send back their completed forms to the VEC.

Our membership drive is proving to be an overwhelming success, and pending confirmation responses from our members, PPV should be registered by the end of June.

We aim to continue to grow the membership base and request that you help in this regard by encouraging you (if you haven’t done so already) and your family and friends to also become members so we become a party with significant membership leading up to the November Victorian elections.

Thank you to all!

Smart meter concerns – La Trobe Valley Express

Dozens gathered outside of Energy and Resources Minister Russell Northe’s Morwell office on Friday protesting to stop the roll-out of smart meters before a health audit is completed.

Stop Smart Meters Australia rally spokesperson Trevor Bridges said Mr Northe had announced an independent audit of smart metres to determine health risks associated with the devices in January this year.

“We have heard nothing since,” Mr Bridges said.

“At the very least the smart meter roll-out should cease until the health audit is completed.”

Mr Bridges said Mr Northe refused to speak to anyone regarding the issue, despite the continued roll-out of smart meters across the state.

He said there were increasing reports of adverse health effects from the “pulsing, microwave emitting, smart meter transmissions”.

A State Government spokesperson said a new technical study had been commissioned to “confirm” the electro-magnetic fields from smart metres continue to fall well within the national radiation standards set by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.

“The new round of testing will update previous studies and help build community confidence in the safety of smart meters,” the spokesperson said.

“The department is making preparations for the commissioning of this study and details will be released as and when they are available.”
