Last week in Ontario Hydro One admitted that rural smart meters do not work, and decided to pull the plug on 36,000 of them — to start with.
In addition, another Canadian company, BC Hydro, announced plans to remove 88,000 smart meters suspected of failure.

In our increasingly interconnected world, technology feels inescapable. But what if the same devices that are supposed to make our lives easier were actually threatening our health?
A small but growing number of people suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, more commonly known as EHS. The condition causes people to feel sick in the presence of the electromagnetic waves that emanate from virtually all modern electronics.
Anything from a mobile phone tower to a wireless router to a refrigerator can trigger feelings of nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and even rashes on the skin, according to the World Health Organization. People who say they suffer from EHS can feel sick merely from the presence of a nearby mobile phone. Prominent figures such as Gro Harlem Brundtland, former chair of WHO and prime minister of Norway, say they are electrosensitive.
People with more drastic symptoms have to seek out places far removed from technology. Green Bank, W. Va., for instance, is the location of the U.S. Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-square-mile area where many types of electromagnetic signals are banned because they could interfere with the world’s largest steerable radio telescope. It’s become the home of many who have essentially abandoned the modern world. With Wi-Fi and mobile phone coverage spreading further all the time, it may one day be their only place of refuge.

What are the health effects of mobile phones and wireless radiation? While Australia has led the world in safety standards, including compulsory seat-belt legislation, plain packaging on cigarettes, and product and food disclosure legislation, it falls behind in addressing the significant issues associated with mobile phone use. In this Dean’s Lecture, epidemiologist and electromagnetic radiation expert, Dr Devra Davis, will outline the evolution of the mobile phone and smartphone, and provide a background to the current 19 year old radiation safety standards (SAR), policy developments and international legislation. New global studies on the health consequences of mobile/wireless radiation will be presented, including children’s exposure and risks.
Dr Devra Davis is an internationally recognised expert on electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and other wireless transmitting devices. She is currently the Visiting Professor of Medicine at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Ondokuz Mayis University, Turkey. Dr Davis was Founding Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute — the first institute of its kind in the world, to examine the environmental factors that contribute to the majority of cases of cancer.
In 2007, Dr Devra Davis founded nonprofit Environmental Health Trust to provide basic research and education about environmental health hazards. Dr Davis served as the President Clinton appointee to the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board in the U.S.A. from 1994–1999, an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents and mitigates chemical accidents.
As the former Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled leading officials in the United States, United Nations, European Environment Agency, Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization, and World Bank.
Dr Davis holds a B.S. in physiological psychology and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, 1967. She completed a PhD in science studies at the University of Chicago as a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellow, 1972 and a M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow, 1982. She has authored more than 200 publications and has been published in Lancet and Journal of the American Medical Association as well as the Scientific American and the New York Times.
This lecture is presented by the Melbourne School of Engineering, in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, the Faculty of Science and the Melbourne Networked Society Institute, at the University of Melbourne.

A Japanese study has demonstrated alleviation of electro-magnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) symptoms after removal of two mobile phone masts from the top of a block of residential units.
Two health surveys were conducted on residents of the towers, the first survey one month before commencement of decommisioning of the masts and the second survey nine months after both masts had ceased operating. The study is complicated by the fact that two mobile phone masts of differing strength were installed 10 years apart and then the masts were decommissioned 4 months apart. However, the timeline on page 6 of the report makes it easier to follow the sequence of events. Pages 9 and 10 list the EHS symptom abatement after removal of each of the masts.
The report is a little complicated and difficult to follow, but the symptom abatement pretty much speaks for itself.

An Australian mum has been successful in preventing installation of WiFi at her child’s school and has worked with the school in drafting EMR precautionary measures by requesting compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Article 9: Accessibility from the Conventions on the Rights of the Disabled to accommodate her child’s functional impairment.
She stated “My child has a sensitivity to EMR, specifically WiFi and Bluetooth elicit symptoms.” The school environment was very good already, to change that by installing WiFi would exclude the child’s access to the school. The first step she took was to register a compliment/complaint/ feedback form on the NSW Dept of Education’s website she said. “I requested help to find a WiFi- free high school and stated my child’s health complaints and symptoms. Rather than sending an email which could get “lost” in the system, I chose to use the education department’s processes for registering my complaint regarding accessibility to schools.” Around the same time, the child’s school initiated the WiFi installation discussion again. This quickly led to further conversations with the school and district education officers covering both accessibility issues.
The mother stated “I read extensively regarding disability in education policy, on human rights and Electro Hypersensitivity where functional impairment and disability were the focus. I was particularly interested in the perspectives of Prof Olle Johansson and Dr Isaac Jamieson, in relation to disability, human rights and the built environment.”
Referring to General Comment No. 2 (2014) Article 9: Accessibility and cross referencing with the Disability Discrimination Act and Disability Standards for Education it became apparent that to override the hardwired system with WiFi could put the school and decision makers in a position of discriminating against the child’s right to education on an equal basis with other students as they would be preventing accessibility to the school.
