Ringing in my ears – Sleeping in the car!!

Recently we spent over $10,000 to install solar panels. We had heard about the dangers of Smart Meters, but didn’t realise it is mandatory to have one after installing new solar panels. The installer turned up on October 17th, unannounced just as I was heading out the door. He was supposed to phone first.

He said he was here to install the smart meter. I asked if there was another type of meter. He said there is, but the smart meter was all he had on him. As we had already waited weeks and were missing out on the Government feed-in tariffs, we allowed him to install the meter, hoping it would be OK.

Big mistake! I didn’t realise the meter has a radio transmitter in it which sends out microwaves 24/7. I am very sensitive to EMF’s and within no time I developed ringing in my ears, buzzing in my brain, headaches, heart palpitations, insomnia and other symptoms.

After many phone calls, sleeping in my car & finally phone calls to the ombudsman, Jemena say they have turned the power to the meter down by 90%. I can’t notice any improvement and have no proof that the meter has been turned down. We have to wait 5-8 weeks for a concilliation meeting as there is a backlog. The Ombudsman say that if the meter complies with Australian standards there is nothing they can do about it.

I believe our standards are not as safe as the European standards and must be reviewed urgently. Meanwhile we have been sleeping in our car for 4 weeks and only returning home to catch up on neccessary tasks. Jemena are aware of this and show no regard for our health or safety. Since installing the meter we lost our pensioner discount on electricity and the rates have changed to peak only. I still can’t spend much time in my home and my husband and I are both sleeping in the car. My husband is battling cancer and does not need this stress and further damage to his immune system.

There have been reports of smart meters causing house fires, especially in older homes. Our home is 41 years old and still has the original wiring. Must we add insult to injury and live in fear of our house burning down?

The radio frequencies from the smart meter are interfering with our security lights and both televisions. We now use a torch to access our outside stairs at night, creating yet another safety hazzard.

A couple of years ago we had wireless Internet which affected me in a similar way, so we got rid of it. They say the smart meter gives off less radiation than a Mobile phone. There is debate about this and I will get independent tests. I can use a mobile phone with a bluetooth or on speaker and don’t react like this. I don’t use a microwave oven.

The point is also that we don’t have mobile phones on our ears 24 hours per day.

There is much research that confirms EMF’s have been linked to brain tumors, breast cancer and childhood leukaemia. Unless we can fix the problem, we may have to sell the house as we cannot live like this. Moving may not help as these smart meters are everywhere. I know my body very well. I was not like this prior to the smart meter and when I stay away, the symptoms clear up, only to return when I come home. I am becoming more sensitive and recovery is taking longer after each exposure.

There are many stories from others in the same situation. It is another nightmare and fight we really didn’t need. Jemena refuse to replace the meter with a safer one. This has destroyed our quality of life and the enjoyment and security of our home. We will be seeking legal advice and compensation.

California are now uninstalling the smart meters as too many people have been made sick by them. This erosion of our freedom and safety is completely unacceptable and I have requested that our smart meter be removed as a matter of urgency, to no avail as yet.

EMF Safety Network | “I am EMF sensitive”

Brian Stein is a CEO of a UK company and is speaking about his EMF sensitivity, also known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). His video is a warning to others about the risks of cell phone use, the signs to watch for and how governments and industry have covered up the health and safety risks.

Do your ears get hot when you use a cell or cordless phone? Do you experience discomfort or pain? These are the early warning signs he ignored and although tests revealed he did not have a brain tumor he’s been left with EHS, which he calls a nightmare. He must avoid many modern conveniences including computers and TV. Travel and vacations have become very difficult.

Oh but you do have a choice……………….

We received a story from a resident in Melbourne who contacted their energy supplier with concerns about their Smart Meter. Since it was installed they were suffering with a number of health issues. Headaches, blurred vision etc. And so they requested that it be removed or turned off because they no longer wanted to be exposed to it’s microwave radiation emissions. They explained that they did not have wireless internet, cordless phones or use a Microwave oven because these things had also caused them health problems. They had made a choice not to use these things. But they said “With a Smart Meter we have no choice as it is always on and we cannot turn it off”.

The response from their energy supplier was “Oh but you do have a choice…….you can move!”

Meters build SPs smart future | Herald Sun

ENERGY distributor SP AusNet expects the continuing roll-out of smart meters to be the key for growth after posting a 12 per cent slide in half-year profit. While revenue was up 5.7 per cent to $830.5 million, largely because of electricity price increases, the companys profit was softer at $146.2 million compared to the same six months last year.

SP AusNet said income tax credits booked in the previous corresponding period did not recur in the latest half.Managing director Nino Ficca said that despite volatility in markets and difficult economic conditions, the distributor was in a strong financial position, “underpinned by growing operating cash flows and sound financial management”.

The company also said no material progress had occurred in two lawsuits brought against it over alleged faulty electricity assets claimed to have been involved in the Victorian bushfires. Smart Meter installers do not have to provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Energy Safe Magazine Issue 23 Summer/Autumn 2011

Click here http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/About-ESV/Reports-and-publications/EnergySafe-Magazine

We refer you to the following pages:Page 6, ESV plans audit of the electrical industry with focus on certificate usage due to their concerns with a large number of defects being discovered.

“The LEW (licensed electrical worker) is required to test the electrical installation work they performed. One of the six mandated tests is a test to prove continuity of the earthing system. Had the certifying LEW performed this mandated test the defect/defects in the earthing system would have been identified. Paul said in the magazine article that the trade, as frequently stressed, has to realise that before connecting any electrical installation work to the electricity supply they are required to perform the tests as specified by Section 8 of AS/NZS 3000:2007. “By not performing these tests they are breaking the law – both the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and the Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 2009, and this could lead to prosecution in the courts.

But then on Page 25, Smart Meters – why are certificates not generated and who can install them? (see note below about the act of 1998 Certificates of Electrical Safety)

Question: Why does ESV not require the distribution businesses to generate a safety certificate for the installation of smart meters?
answer: ESV has strict safety requirements for the installation of smart meters. It is compulsory for licensed electricians to obtain a certificate of electrical safety from ESV for all work they carry out. The certificate regime is in place to ensure that the work done is safe and provides traceability of the work and electrician. Work carried out by a distribution business is regulated by a different regime that is both rigorous and appropriate

“The most recent reverse polarity connection was made during the replacement of an electricity meter at a residential property. It energized the meter box and metallic plumbing fittings (hot water unit. water taps, etc.. ) to 240 volts. A lady received an electric shock to her hand when turning a water tap at the rear of the property.”

then on Page 4, of the Magazine “ESV review of guidelines on colour blindness!!”

ESV propoes to review and consult with the Electrical trades on guidelines regarding colour confusion or colour blindness among workers.

Page 3, ESV is auditing the Smart meter installation program across Victoria to Ensure that correct and Safe procedures are being followed. (audit began back in Feb 2011)

Yesterdays Sydney morning Herald stated: A government spokesman said ESV reviewed the Smart Metering Program between February and April.

“The review concluded that the public should have confidence that the meters are being installed safely and by qualified and trained people,” he said. http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/mfb-looks-into-smart-meter-link-to-fires-20111107-1n2vm.html

This completed review can be found here http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=xwL3BYAPSqg%3d&tabid=222&mid=2056

Of particular concern is the statement found in the safety review of the Advanced Metering Installation (AMI) published in the ESV Media release of 6 April, 2011

Which states – The review also found that:

• It is possible for meters to be installed safely and tested in 10 minutes but the actual time to complete depends significantly on location, access and a range of other external influences.

It goes on to state – Recommended enhancements to the program include:

• In a limited number of instances, there is a need to review written procedures (as distinct from practice) to ensure conformity to strict compliance with the Victorian Electricity Supply Industry (VESI) test procedures. (Is this not what the Certificate of Electrical Safety is for?)

• Checking specifically that installers hold a Certificate III in Electrotechnology rather than relying on an assumption that all categories of electrical licenses require a Certificate III. In a very small number of cases some installers who hold supervised electrical workers’ licences and who had been employed as installers did not have the Certificate III. (Is this evidence of unqualified installers?)

• Issuing an advice card to the customer and signed personally by the installer that the installation had passed all of the required tests and complied with the requirements of the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and regulations. Some businesses have adopted these cards to be left at premises when the new meters are installed. (Again: Is this not what the Certificate of Electrical Safety is for?) (Has anyone seen on of these cards?)

Perhaps a reason why the Certificates of Electrical safety are not generated by all installers is because only a fully qualified electrician can fill them in? Installation time would also no doubt increase to more than 10 minutes!!

Note: The Certificates of Electrical Safety (COES) Act states: The Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 2009 requires a certificate of electrical safety to be issued for all electrical installation work.  Failure to comply with the certificate requirements is a criminal offence and licensed workers that fail to comply may be subject to disciplinary action which could result in the suspension or cancellation of their licence.http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/Electricity-Professionals/Certificates-Of-Electrical-Safety-COES

3AW audio – Fires linked to smart meters?

Fires linked to smart meters?Posted by: 3AW Radio | 7 November, 2011 – 9:35 AM. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade says there is no cause for public alarm after it launched an official investigation into fires, linked to Smart Meters. Brigade Command has ordered all firefighters to report fires, where smart meters are present and has advised officers not to allow power companies to take the meters from the scene. There have been three smart meter switchboard fires in recent weeks. Chief Fire Officer Shane Wright says its a standard procedure and at this stage there is no firm link with the meters.

Fire investigators probe link between smart meters and house fires | Herald Sun

The MFB is investigating a link between smart meters and house fires. Herald SunUPDATE 8.57am: THE Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board has launched an investigation into a possible link between smart meters and house fires.

An email sent to fire investigators reads: “With the increase in fires relating to smart meters, FIA has initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of these fires.”

Fire investigators have been told not to remove a smart meter from the scene of a fire until investigations take place.

Chief Fire Officer Shane Wright said there had been three fires in the last four weeks at homes where smart meters had been recently installed.

He denied the fires were caused by the actual smart meters.”Its actually about fires involving switchboards where smart meters have just been installed, he told 3AWs Neil Mitchell program.

Mr Wright said the investigation would examine whether the smart meters were being installed properly and report their findings to the Chief Electrical Inspector.

Fire investigations officers have been told to ensure that the power company representative does not remove the meter from the scene. Have you had a fire related to a smart meter? Dizziness and burning sensations.

Since moving back into the house I grew up in whilst we renovate and extend our inner city terrace our lives have been turned upside down. 3 months after we moved in my Daughter who is 8 started to wake up with headaches. Her school would ring me during the day and I would have to come and pick her up because she felt unwell. Her headaches went on for over a week and a half when I started to panic and think the worse. When my sister was 12 years old she was diagnosed with brain tumours so automatically I panicked thinking my daughter had the same thing. In a panic I took her to the Children’s Hospital who performed a CT scan on her head. Thankfully it was all clear, however, the amounts of radiation she was exposed to due the CT scan still haunts me today. I almost had a break down because of it and blamed my self for exposing her to such harmful radiation from the CT but I was only acting as a concerned mother….

A few weeks later I started to get headaches and suffered from dizziness and burning sensations. This is when I started to question what was going on and what was new in the house that could cause us to get sick as outside the home I felt fine. My sister told me a smart meter was installed a yr ago. I contacted YShield to have the meter tested. As it turns out the neighbours meter which faces my kid’s bedroom was the cause of my daughter’s headaches and our meter which was attached to my bedroom was making me sick. I contacted SP Ausnet to express my concerns they came and tested the home and of course found there to be nothing wrong and all radiation levels met the Australian Standards. I asked them to remove my metre and the neighbours but of course they refused. I was forced then to shield my home with special paint that Yshield sold to me. At first I was sceptical but I was desperate to try anything. Overall I spent around $3000 buying paints and special curtains which stop radiation coming through the windows. It took a good 6 weeks for my body to recover after painting and shielding certain rooms. I now don’t feel any effects of the smart metre and feel great inside the home. No more headaches no more dizziness and no more burning sensations. The paints for me did work. However, my big problem I now face which is causing me so much anxiety is that the suburb we will be moving into has recently had smart metres installed. I of course made sure that one was not put on my property which City Power agreed to do for the time being, However, my neighbour got one and it faces my terrace and being in the inner city these terraces are all attached which means the distance between my house and the neighbours metre is no more than a few metres. When I walked into my house recently before I knew they had installed the smart meters in the area, I instantly felt dizzy and unwell which stopped me in my tracks. I walked out side and checked the neighbours meter and to my shock horror they had a new smart metre…my nightmare starts again…

I am so angry that we are forced to have these things and sick of hearing the power company’s excuses, they being, mobile phones and cordless phones emit far more radiation. Well my mobile phone and cordless phone DO NOT MAKE ME SICK yet these SMART METERS DO and these power company’s can not give me a simple explanation on why. The difference between Mobiles, Cordless, Microwaves etc oppose to Smart Metres is that the further away you distance your self from them the radiation levels drop dramatically, however, Smart Metres have been designed to travel long distance therefore there radiation levels do not drop off the further you distance yourself from them.

Having said that we can choose if we want a cordless phone in our home or use a mobile phone. With these Smart Metres there is No Choice. Further more I am so so angry that my child got sick because of the roll out of these metres and sadly had to undergo a CT scan because of it.
