Canadian Tech Leader Warns of Wi-Fi, Smartphone, Cell Tower Radiation

The former president of Microsoft Canada is among those warning about the dangers of Wi-Fi and electromagnetic radiation exposure, and he’s heading up initiatives to find safe alternatives to current wireless uses.

Frank Clegg, a leader on the Canadian technology scene for many years, says he supports those parents and concerned individuals who object to wireless Internet in schools.

“This is a real hazard and we shouldn’t wait for the government to catch up to the technology,” said Clegg, who was head of Microsoft Canada for nearly 15 years and now leads a national organization called Citizens 4 Safe Technology (C4ST). “We should exercise caution, especially with children.”

What are CitiPower, Powercor, Jemena and United Energy hiding?

The location of telecommunication towers in Australia is freely available.  Why aren’t collectors in the meshed smart meter networks also within the public domain?  Areas close to collectors may have higher levels of radiation than other areas in the meshed smart meter networks.  Why should collectors fall under the radar?

Victorian power distributors CitiPower and Powercor Australia, Jemena and United Energy, along with Western Power in WA, Essential Energy and Endeavour Energy in NSW, and WEL Networks and Unison in New Zealand, have all elected to use smart grid technology from Silver Spring Networks.

Access Points are the lynchpins in the meshed smart meter networks.  Don’t be mistaken by their innocent appearance. These are the devices which link wireless communications between all the smart meters in a given area and the utility. This means that Access Points aren’t just fulcrums for the 915 – 928 MHz microwave communications, but they also deploy other communications.  For instance, CitiPower elected, in its rollout of smart meters, to use Telstra for its 3G ‘backhaul’ communications between Access Points and CitiPower.

Relays are an intermediary device used to extend microwave signals in a meshed network between smart meters (‘end points’) and the Access Point.

Pictures of a Powercor Access Point, seen from two different angles, follow.  Have you spotted one of these devices in your neighbourhood?

LANDMARK LAWSUIT LAUNCHED AGAINST EDISON AND PG&E OVER HEALTH EFFECTS FROM SMART METERS

Customers Sue Edison and PG&E Over Health Effects From Smart Meters/Smart grid

The law firms of David Kyle and Paul Overett have filed suit against SCE Edison and PG&E for health effects from smart meters/smart grid and will host a press conference on: Wed. June 12th, 12:00 PM at 5150 E. Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90804.
A total of 16 plaintiffs, 10 SCE Edison and 6 PG&E with health effects ranging from headaches, loss of energy and ringing in the ears to cancer, heart attacks and medical implant interference/defibrillator shut offs, are holding those responsible for the new wireless digital meters accountable.

Also named in the lawsuit are smart meter distribution companies, Corix and Wellington and smart meter manufacturers, Itron and Landis and Gyr, with possibly more defendants to be added as the suit progresses.

Health effects associated with smart meters and smart grid have been reported all over the country, but because of the 3.4 billion dollars in federal stimulus grants offered utility companies in exchange for smart meter installation, these complaints have largely been ignored. Also ignoring the complaints of health effects was CPUC president Michael Peevey, who served as president of Edison for over a decade.

The smart meter roll out has been plagued with controversy ever since the WHO came out with its statement on the radiation associated with the meters being a possible human carcinogen. Despite these warnings, the Federal government persisted in its funding of the potentially carcinogenic metering and infrastructure which also serves the dual function of spying on American citizens.

Other problems with the meters consist of over billing, fire hazard, invasion of privacy and multiple Constitutional violations. But none of these have received as much public backlash as the issue of health effects from smart meters and smart grid.

Occupy Your Home: Confronting Smart Meter Toxification

Smart Meters are being rolled out in many countries around the world. A common factor in many of these roll outs are the number of people who are unaware of the potential dangers posed by these devices. James F. Tracy PhD, media critic and educator wrote a blog on this issue. Excerpts of some of the key points covered in Professor Tracey’s blog are detailed below.

“An overwhelming majority of US and Canadian citizens are entirely unaware that an especially dangerous device has been attached to their homes. While installation of “smart meters” across North America has continued apace since 2009 the health effects such devices pose have yet to be fully realized. Left unaddressed the broad use and continued deployment of such equipment will almost certainly influence human health for many generations to come…..

…The foremost danger of smart meters is that they are designed to communicate with each other by emitting substantial and frequent bursts of radio frequency (RF) microwave pollution several thousand times per day–a cumulative burden on one’s genetic and biological makeup that children and the elderly are especially vulnerable to given their respective developing and degenerative conditions…..Such information is intentionally overlooked by power utilities and little-if-any acknowledgement of negative health effects appear in any of the vacuous paraphernalia they provide their customers–and state regulators–promoting the meters……

…..A half century ago tobacco and asbestos were known menaces to health and over the long-term exposure to these substances culminated in a variety of cancers and other terminal diseases compelling the government to intervene on the public’s behalf. The credible scientific evidence suggests the same holds true for exposure to RF microwave radiation. In fact, government and academic research dating to the 1960s points to the potential health dangers of sustained RF and EMF exposure. While the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Communications Commission, and the American Cancer Society claim that RF and EMF pose no health risks, their conclusions are based on dubious and outdated studies often funded by the telecommunications industry itself….

…Aside from long-term adverse health effects, smart meters also pose more immediate safety and privacy concerns. The equipment has not been inspected by and thus does not meet  the protocols of the internationally recognized authority on consumer appliance safety standards, Underwriters Laboratory, a potential violation of numerous state and local municipal codes. Careless installation or the limited integrity of smart meter engineering and design have been pointed to as the possible cause of house fires.

Wi-Fi Technology – an uncontrolled global experiment on the health of mankind

Wi-Fi technology – an uncontrolled global experiment on the health of mankind

Marko Markov – Research International, Williamsville, NY, USA, Yuri G. Grigoriev – National Committee of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, Moscow, Russia

“More than 10 years ago, at the WHO organized meeting on harmonization of standards one of the authors pointed out that neglecting the hazard of high-frequency EMF for children is a crime against humanity (Markov, 2001).

We believe that scientific community must be more insisting in comprehension of potential hazard that mobile exchange of information is potentially invoked in human organisms. In that aspect, it is very important that the IARC classified the RF EMF as a possible cancerogene (2B). It is important to note that for less than two years this major International Agency switched from “no conclusive evidence for health hazard” to “possible cancerogen”.

In 2003, IEEE published a standard that affirmed that biological effects can only be thermal (Cho & D’Andrea, 2003). No heat – no effect. This policy serves very well in the industry and creates a serious barrier preventing biology-based assessment of the human health. The scientific community must be more insisting in comprehension of potential hazard that mobile exchange of information potentially invoke in human organisms.

In conclusion, we would like to point out the following:
1. For a number of reasons, the evaluation and prevention of hazard from ionizing radiation have been developed during the last 60 years.
2. The problem of potential hazard of non ionizing radiation is studied for significantly shorter period of time and significant differences in standards in different countries can be seen. It is due to the fact that in North America the standards are based on engineering computation, while in former Soviet Union and Easter Europe the standards are biologically based. Despite all efforts of the WHO for harmonization of standards, today standards do not consider the real pollution of the environment with non ionizing radiation.
3. The comparison of both sources of radiation leads to conclusion that the continuous non controlled exposure of the entire civilization to low-intensity EMFs represents now more serious problem for the mankind than ionizing radiation where the sources of radiation are under strict control and are well localized.
4. For the first time in the history of mankind, because of aggressive use of mobile phones children are exposed to harmful non ionizing radiation and potentially are subject of larger risk than adults. Even if the dose received by the children’s brain is the same as for adults, due to the specificity of the body size and physiological development, children are in greater danger. It might be compared to the hazard of EMF for professional groups.
5. In early 2012, the European Parliament voted by 512 to 16 to urge member countries to impose stricter limits for exposure to radiation from mobile phone and Wi-Fi technologies, especially taking care for the most sensitive population of children.
6. The scientific and medical communities are obliged to ring the bell – the health and standardization institutions must urgently develop recommendations and actions for protection of the civilization and especially children.
7. We should stop telling the science, politicians and general population that Wi-Fi is harmless.
8. We should better be honest and say that “we do not know what long-term effects might be.”

A New Allergy, Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity

Imagine if you lived inside your microwave and could see the ubiquitous frequencies bombarding you several times per minute 24/7. You might be horrified. Some people are now claiming that they are getting sick from it. A condition referred to as ‘electromagnetic hypersensitivity,’ is a new form of ‘environmental allergy.’ This sort of multi-frequency barrage of radiation to living beings, is unprecedented …and rapidly increasing. Welcome, ‘smart’ grid.

Dirty electricity is an industry term that describes multi-frequency exposures, such as higher frequencies like RF (radio frequency), ELF’s (Electromagnetic Low Frequency), running along power lines, or EMF’s (electromagnetic frequencies). Europe has already created ‘safe’ havens to get away from the ‘grids’ that silently intrude human cells.

The French national library banned Wi-Fi in libraries when librarians became ill. In Sweden, this allergy is classified as a functional disability and they have declared some public buildings to be free of RF (radio frequency). As of June 1, 2010, the California Public Utilities Commission reported 2,000 health-related complaints.

Electrosensitivity: is technology killing us?

“Is modern life making us ill? Yes, say those who suffer from electrosensitivity. Are they cranks, or should we all be throwing away our mobile phones?” was recently published in The Guardian.

Big Brother to switch off your fridge: Power giants to make millions – but you must pay for ‘sinister’ technology

  • Computer chips will take control of home appliances when energy is low
  • Sensors will detect spikes in demand for power and when grid struggles to meet it, will temporarily shut off appliances
  • Can shut down supply without warning – or your consent

What is being planned for Australia with the E3 looking at mandating ‘Smart Appliance’ Interfaces for Air Conditioners, Water Heaters and other Appliances is also being played out around the world.

In the UK there have been serious criticisms leveled against the plan.

Viktor Sundberg, energy strategy manager at Electrolux, warned: ‘This is Big Brother technology on a grand scale. The device inside the fridge or freezer will automatically change the way the appliance operates in response to the output of the grid.

‘This method of shutting down household appliances could to be carried out almost instantly, saving the energy companies millions because they won’t have to start up the turbines or pay huge industrial companies to cut production. Consumers are not benefiting at all and will be left paying more when they buy the appliances, as well as having their private goods controlled by outside forces.’

It is currently estimated that the E3 Program will yield a cumulative economic benefit to Australia of AUD$22.4 billion1 by 2024. Of course where is the 22.4 billion$ coming from? I think it is safe to say it will be coming out of the consumers pockets which is you and me. The smart meter roll out was also supposed to provide benefits to the community but we are yet to witness a single one, instead we are faced with increased bills and billing errors. It is therefore very likely that the E3 program will be another smoke and mirrors affair with the industry being the only one who benefits.

IS THE SMART GRID REALLY SECURE?

Four Corner's reporter Andrew Fowler reveals that hackers, working from locations overseas, have targeted key Federal Government departments and major corporations in Australia.

Four Corner’s reporter Andrew Fowler reveals that hackers, working from locations overseas, have targeted key Federal Government departments and major corporations in Australia.

“HACKED!” – Monday 27 May 2013

While debate rages over Australia’s border security, there’s growing evidence that the greatest threat to Australia’s national security potentially comes from foreign computer hackers. Few in government or business will admit the full extent of the break-ins, with one expert calling it a “dirty little secret”.

Relevant comments on smart grid security taken directly from ABC Four Corners “Hacked” transcript

“ANDREW FOWLER: The shutting down of the satellite and the attack on the Iranian facility served as a warning, that infrastructure is in the front line. Dams and electricity generating plants, anything using computerised systems are vulnerable to cyber attack.

JOHN BLACKBURN: What’s happened over time is we’re becoming more and more reliant on this cyber domain. It’s a, it’s a nice buzz word but it’s basically the way everything functions and operates today and more so in the future. For example, the use of smart grids in the electricity networks and wireless connectivity for those. It makes a lot of sense financially or economically and it’s far more efficient but have we designed those systems to address the potential threats to them and in my view that hasn’t been done well.”

Danish Students Attract International Attention with Cress and Wifi Experiment

Researchers from England, Holland and Sweden have shown great interest in the five girls’ biology experiments.

Take 400 Cress seeds and place them into 12 trays. Then place six trays in two rooms at the same temperature. Give them the same amount of water and sun over 12 days, and remember to expose half of them to mobile [Wi-Fi] radiation.

It is a recipe for a biology test so brilliant that it has attracted international attention among acknowledged biologists and radiation experts. Behind the experiment are five girls from 9b in Hjallerup School in North Jutland, and it all started because they found it difficult to concentrate during the school day:

– We all think we have experienced difficulty concentrating in school, if we had slept with the phone next to our head, and sometimes also experienced having difficulty sleeping, explains Lea Nielsen, who is one of the five aspiring researchers.

The school was not equipped to test the effect of mobile phone radiation on them. Therefore, the girls had to find an alternative. And the answer was Cress.

Six trays of seeds were put into a room without radiation, and six trays were put into another room next to two [Wi-Fi] routers. Such routers broadcast the same type of radiation as an ordinary mobile.

Then it was just necessary to wait 12 days, observe, measure, weigh and take pictures along the way. And the result spoke was clear: cress seeds next to the router did not grow, and some of them were even mutated or dead.
