Smart meter health surveys show striking symptom similarities

Two recent studies into the health impacts of wireless smart meters show striking similarities, despite having been conducted independently of each other and on separate sides of the world.  One survey was conducted in the USA and the other, a peer reviewed study in Victoria, Australia.

Both reports list insomnia as the most commonly occurring symptom and, of the top 10 symptoms, the same 8 symptoms appear in both reports.  These symptoms include headaches, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), cognitive disturbances (memory, concentration, confusion), fatigue/weakness, dizziness, cardiac anomalies and neuropathy.

Steve Weller, Vice President of SSMA Inc., in an email to ARPANSA says, “If EHS was purely psychological as some experts suggest, it would mean that approximately 37,000,000 Europeans, 16,000,000 Americans and more than 900,000 Australians are suffering from ‘some kind of mutual mental disorder or illusion‘.  If we were really serious about investigating this issue we would conduct studies using scientists with medical and biological backgrounds rather than just psychologists and/or electrical engineers”.

Inside the ‘quiet zone’, home to electrosensitives | Lateline

The tiny US town of Green Bank, West Virginia is in the ‘quiet zone’ – free from wireless communications due to the sensitivity of a high-powered telescope. That makes it attractive to ‘electrosensitives’ like Diane Schou – those who are unable to live with the frequencies emitted by modern electrical devices.

Study suggests Wi-Fi exposure more dangerous to kids than previously thought – Forbes Online

Most parents would be concerned if their children had significant exposure to lead, chloroform, gasoline fumes, or the pesticide DDT.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRIC), part of the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO), classifies these and more than 250 other agents as Class 2B Carcinogens – possibly carcinogenic to humans.  Another entry on that same list is radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF/EMF).  The main sources of RF/EMF are radios, televisions, microwave ovens, cell phones, and Wi-Fi devices.

Uh-oh. Not another diatribe about the dangers of our modern communication systems?  Obviously, these devices and the resulting fields are extremely (and increasingly) common in modern society.  Even if we want to, we can’t eliminate our exposure, or our children’s, to RF/EMF.  But, we may need to limit that exposure, when possible.

That was among the conclusions of a survey article published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure entitled “Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences.”  From an analysis of others studies, the authors argue that children and adolescents are at considerable risk from devices that radiate microwaves (and that adults are at a lower, but still significant, risk).  The following points were offered for consideration:

  • Children absorb a greater amount of microwave radiation than adults.
  • Unborn babies are even more vulnerable than children.  Therefore pregnant women should avoid exposing their fetus to microwave radiation.
  • Adolescent girls and women should not place mobile phones in their bras or in hijabs (headscarf).
  • Mobile phone manual warnings make clear an overexposure problem exists.
  • Government warnings have been issued but most of the public are unaware of such warnings.
  • Current exposure limits are inadequate and should be revised.
  • Wireless devices are radio transmitters, not toys.  Selling toys that use them should be monitored more closely.

Children and unborn babies absorb more microwave radiation, according to the authors, because their bodies are relatively smaller, their skulls are thinner, and their brain tissue is more absorbent.

Wi-Fi Epidemic?

In some of Europe’s largest countries Wi-Fi has been banned from daycare centres and nurseries and more and more schools – but there is currently no similar moves here in Australia. Recently France banned wi-fi from centres where children under the age of 3 spend time.  Israel is investigating the effect of Wi-Fi upon school students.

Channel 7 news has reported that Wi-Fi exposure may be an epidemic in the making:

Smart meter problems force Balwyn North family out of home – Herald Sun/Leader

A SMART meter has caused untold grief for a Balwyn North family of four, eventually forcing them out of their home.

John Aparo and Virginia Lo Giudice and their two sons, Alexander and Lucas, said they were left with no choice but to move after their smart meter was installed near her bedroom.

“I started having heart palpitations and not being able to sleep,” Mrs Lo Giudice said. “It would take me an hour to get to sleep and then I was constantly waking up every couple of hours.

“I also had nausea during the morning and headaches, was always fatigued and had no energy, and just had a general feeling of being unwell.”

Mrs Lo Giudice said she hadn’t experienced those symptoms before the smart meter was fitted.

She said she saw her doctor, who carried out a number of tests, but couldn’t find any underlying issues.

“I couldn’t bring it down to anything else because we had been living in that house for years and never had any problems.”

The 49-year-old said she called CitiPower — who had connected the electronic device outside her bedroom window — to see if she could have it removed or relocated, but was unsuccessful.

CitiPower spokesman Drew Douglas said it, along with Powercor Australia, had put in all but 4000 smart meters out of 1.1 million in its service area.

“Throughout the entire process we’ve tried to work with customers for anyone that has concerns about smart meters for any reason, keeping in mind it was a government-mandated program,” Mr Douglas said.

In reference to Mrs Lo Giudice’s specific case, he said “once the meters had been installed, we didn’t have old meters to put back in”.

Mrs Lo Giudice said she redesigned the layout of her home, including moving her bedroom downstairs.

“In the end, it was too hard to reconfigure the house, so I thought if we can’t move the smart meter, we’ll just move ourselves.

“I was sick and tired of feeling that way and I know that when we went away or when I wasn’t near the smart meter, my symptoms went away and I felt good, so I didn’t want to risk any further complications.”

Mrs Lo Giudice said she didn’t want to leave the area, so they bought another house on the same street when it became available.

Energy and Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the smart meter rollout was almost complete.

“Independent testing has shown that electromagnetic signals are lower than many other common household devices, such as cordless phones and baby monitors,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Mr Douglas said the smart meter’s internal radio transmitter worked at about half the signal strength of a mobile phone. “It makes the equivalent of a mobile phone call of a few seconds length, several times a day,” he said.

But Lou Coppola, a candidate for the People Power Victoria — No Smart Meters party at November’s state election, said the Government hadn’t conducted any long-term research into the meters’ health effects.

“If Virginia was the only case, you could say it’s one of those freaky sort of things and there’s probably not enough data to make a considered or informed decision,” Mr Coppola said.

“But when you consider there are thousands of people that are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation, which is emitted by the smart meters, you have to say there is a problem.”

Australian study puts Victoria at centre stage of the smart meter controversy

JournalA 92 case series report by Melbourne medical practitioner Dr Federica Lamech titled “Self-Reporting of Symptom Development From Exposure to Radiofrequency Fields of Wireless Smart Meters in Victoria, Australia: A Case Series” has been published in the Nov/Dec 2014 issue of the US clinical journal ‘Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine’. The journal is a PubMed listed, peer-reviewed publication.

Alternative Therapies

The case series was compiled using de-identified data collected by Steve Weller B.Sc.

It reveals that the most commonly reported symptoms from exposure to wireless smart meters were (1) insomnia, (2) headaches, (3) tinnitus, (4) fatigue, (5) cognitive disturbances, (6) dysesthesias (abnormal sensation) and (7) dizziness; and that the effects of these symptoms on people’s lives were significant.

Table 2. Effect on People’s Lives

  1. Having to go on a disability pension
  2. Not being able to use part of one’s house
  3. Restricting freedom of movement
  4. Spending a lot of money on shielding products
  5. Causing financial problems
  6. Causing relationship problems
  7. Having to undergo otherwise unnecessary medical investigations
  8. Needing to see a psychologist and doctors
  9. Producing general deterioration in quality of life
  10. Needing to restrict time spent using a computer
  11. Needing to avoid all EMR emitting devices
  12. Being unable to drive
  13. Causing secondary stress
  14. Having to temporarily move out of one’s home while it was being shielded
  15. Developing concerns about long-term effects of exposure
  16. Relocating bedroom
  17. Decreased performance at work
  18. Being unable to work
  19. Being able to feel normal only when away from home
  20. Causing several issues, such as lethargy or cognitive impairment, secondary to sleep disturbances
  21. Needing to move into a caravan 25 km out of town
  22. Sleeping in a van for 6 months
  23. Relocating to another state

Abbreviation: EMR = electromagnetic radiation.

A draft of the report had already gained support from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) last year with a public statement by them that “It is a well documented 92 case series that is scientifically valid. It clearly demonstrates adverse health effects in the human population from smart meter emissions.”

http://skyvisionsolutions.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/aaem-wireless-smart-meter-case-studies.pdf

Stop Smart Meters Australia is of the opinion that this report will help the global, international effort to better understand the effects of nonionizing radiation and of wireless smart meters in particular, on human health.

Dr Lamech ‘offers the hypothesis that some people can develop symptoms from exposure to radiofrequency fields of wireless smart meters.’ She concludes that ‘This hypothesis cannot be disproven without further assessment of the affected individuals and the electromagnetic fields in which they live.’ Dr Lamech calls for ‘the establishment of a postrollout surveillance study and funding for further research into the particular effects of wireless smart meters, in conjunction with research into the short-term and long-term consequences of EMR exposure.’
