Smart Meter Madness
Wednesday, 11 July 2012
By John Cornish

In Melbourne it is common to find a bed-head up against a bedroom wall with an electrical meter immediately on the outside. In this case it seems possible that for people sleeping in close proximity to a smart meter on the outside wall, their RF exposures may be significantly in excess of a Swiss transmitter study that found increased nervousness, difficulty in falling asleep, difficulty in maintaining sleep, general weakness and joint pains. Sleep disturbance was associated with a maximum exposure of 1.85 uW/cm2 and a mean night-time exposure of less than 0.7 uW/cm2.
A recent Melbourne study revealed frequent RF spikes every few seconds that are of far greater intensity – (up to 36.4 uW/cm2)
Higher amounts of electromagnetic field radiation is a huge public health issue for Melbourne (and elsewhere), given the ubiquitous roll-out of the meters. This should call for an immediate halt to the roll-out and a commencement of independent research to determine the extent of people’s exposures, especially when a smart meter is in close proximity to a bedroom. Symptoms reported and their actual home RF exposure levels would be a good start. The BIG question: Is there a research organisation left in Australia that is not financially dependent on $$$ handouts from the corporations promoting smart meter technology?
The Victorian Government is trying to convince us that smart meters are good for us. We should not blindly accept what official sources tell us. In the 1940s governments were saying there was no proven evidence to suggest that smoking was harmful to health, and smoking was deemed to be a safe activity. Tobacco companies knew of the dangers but protected their financial interests by remaining silent over the health risks of smoking. In the 1960s asbestos was still being manufactured and sold to an unsuspecting public even though governments and asbestos manufacturers had known of the dangers of this product for many years. We must not allow the smart meter madness to saturate our region with heightened levels of EMF radiation and endanger the lives of our men, women and most vulnerable children.
Many shires in the USA have had enough of the smart meter nonsense and legislated against further roll-outs in their county. Others have legislated to allow people to opt out of having to accept the devices without financial penalty.
Why is Australia behind other countries in acknowledging the health dangers of ever increasing levels of electro magnetic radiation on the population?

Smart Meter Safety
Sunday, 29 July 2012
By Sarah Elliott

Hugo Armstrong, of CitiPower and Powercorp Australia, states correctly in his letter (The Guardian July 27) that there is a lot of inaccurate information circulating with regard to Smart Meters. There is no doubt that this is true, given that the wider community does not have the resources or education to ensure that they are well informed. He goes on to cite that Smart Meters and their levels of electromagnetic and radio frequency emissions have been found to be safe. What Mr Armstrong does not address, are the concerns regarding the cumulative effects of EMR (Electromagnetic Radiation), which are becoming increasingly well documented by leading world scientists, including those who have had involvement in the World Health Organisation. The WHO has (in May 2011) acknowledged via an IARC designation that this form of wireless technology is “possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)”.
Most of us do not realize that the physiological functions in human beings (as in all living organisms) are electrochemical in nature. Dr Magda Havas PhD, an Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, has worked in the field of EMF for many years. Her research investigates the biological effects (both positive and negative) of electromagnetic energy. Many of her credible findings are not to be ignored.
The Swedish government have officially recognised EMR Sensitivity as a disability. Highly respected Professor Olle Johannsson PhD, who has worked alongside Nobel laureates, has been instrumental in providing years of research to highlight the impact of EMR.
The Swiss Government has enforced some of the world’s strictest radiation guidelines. One only need to look to Swisscom, the government owned telecommunications provider, who have exercised extreme caution with regard to EMR, including the provision of cable networks rather than wireless WiFi to its schools’ computer systems. To counterbalance such technologies as smart meters, the government has released many standards and advices to its citizens, who as a result are well informed and can exercise due caution. In Victoria, however, it has been admitted that the Government and power companies have not done well in this regard. Switzerland is the home of the WHO, and their caution is to be noted.
The concern is that we are all being exposed to a new potential carcinogen bombarding us daily in our homes. Until the present time we have all had a choice as to how much EMR exposure we allow into our home life. At the local Smart Meter information meeting the Powercor representative, in defeated tones, alluded to the fact that in time, smart meter technologies will also be used to track our water and gas usage. Such devices remove our choice in the matter.
Are we all going to use the let’s wait and see attitude, and allow these extra invisible challenges to our health and immune systems? I’d rather have a choice in this matter.
Mr Armstrong, should I abandon the wireless technologies I have control of in my home for one that I have no wish for, in order to try to balance the cumulative effect on my family? Would my power bill be any cheaper if I did??

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity: Fact or fiction?

As the prevalence of wireless telecommunication escalates throughout the world, health professionals are faced with the challenge of patients who report symptoms they claim are connected with exposure to some frequencies of electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Some scientists and clinicians acknowledge the phenomenon of hypersensitivity to EMR resulting from common exposures such as wireless systems and electrical devices in the home or workplace; others suggest that electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) is psychosomatic or fictitious. Various organizations including the World Health Organization as well as some nation states are carefully exploring this clinical phenomenon in order to better explain the rising prevalence of non-specific, multi-system, often debilitating symptoms associated with non-ionizing EMR exposure. As well as an assortment of physiological complaints, patients diagnosed with EHS also report profound social and personal challenges, impairing their ability to function normally in society. This paper offers a review of the sparse literature on this perplexing condition and a discussion of the controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the EHS diagnosis. Recommendations are provided to assist health professionals in caring for individuals complaining of EHS.  Stephen J. Genuis & Christopher T. Lipp

MEDIA RELEASE – Powercor Fails To Guarantee Safety of Smart Meters

Stop Smart Meters Australia

MEDIA RELEASE

Powercor Fails To Guarantee Safety of Smart Meters

Responding to concerns a customer has on the health effects of smart meters, Powercor truthfully declared in writing that “We are not in a position to give you any guarantees or assurances about the smart meters and your health concerns.”

Yet Hon. Michael O’Brien, Minister for Energy and Resources, is continually pronouncing through the media that smart meters are categorically safe and have absolutely no effects on people’s health.  If smart meters are safe, why can’t power distributors guarantee their safety?

Ms Janobai Smith, spokesperson for Stop Smart Meters Australia, said “We find it astonishing that despite the mounting evidence, Minister O’Brien fails to acknowledge that a percentage of the Victorian population is sensitive to microwave radiation and suffer adverse health effects resulting from the installation of smart meters.  Symptoms include disrupted sleep, headaches, nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and tinnitus  (ringing in ears).  Many of these people have medical certificates attributing their condition to smart meters.”

This coming weekend, Stop Smart Meters Australia will be providing support to a gathering of people who are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation and who have been adversely affected by smart meters.  These are the unfortunate people that the Baillieu Government and power distributors have chosen to ignore.

“Smart Meters Australia supports these people’s rights to ‘opt out’ of the smart meter program and have their smart meter replaced with an analogue or non-wireless meter” said Ms Smith.

Call to ‘roll back’ roll out – Local News – Latrobe Valley Express

Trevor Bridges is heading a local campaign against the installation of Smart Meters.

A CAMPAIGN to stop the local Smart Meter roll-out, amid claims of safety concerns, is gaining traction in Churchill.

Electricity distributor SP AusNet has advised it is currently rolling out smart meters in the Latrobe Valley in an effort to “help meet Victoria’s changing energy needs”.

The company said Energy Safe Victoria had confirmed smart meters were safe and did not pose “any greater safety risk” than existing electronic or electromechanical meters.

That information has done little to dispel concerns in Churchill, where the rollout has commenced.

Last Friday, more than 100 people attended a Smart Meter Forum in Churchill, organised by the Churchill Stop Smart Meters Action Group.

Chairperson Trevor Bridges said several speakers outlined the potential risks of smart meters, including a man who said his family had developed serious health problems when a smart meter was installed on his neighbour’s house, opposite their bedrooms.

Mr Bridges said three to four per cent of the population were sensitive to radio frequencies, which meant in Churchill there could be 141 radio sensitive people and in Traralgon the number could be as high as 660.

“A smart meter on their properties could be a real health problem for them,” he added.

Those at the meeting voted to support the right of customers to refuse installation of smart meters and to have their decision respected by electrical distributors.

It called on the State Government to allow customers the right to “opt out” of the smart meter program and it agreed those who experienced health problems considered to be caused by the smart meters should have them removed “and replaced with analogue or non wireless meter”.

The forum also discussed concerns about the program’s escalating costs and billing problems, according to Mr Bridges.

He said the action group would appeal to State Premier Ted Baillieu and State Energy Minister Michael O’Brien asking them to meet with community representatives over their concerns.

Residents express concern over smart meters – Swan Hill Local News – The Guardian

CONCERNED: Mother-of-three Sarah Elliot, pictured with children Arabella, Millie, and Henry, is concerned about the effect the new smart meters will have on her family’s long-term health.

LOCAL community members have voiced concern over health risks associated with new electronic metering equipment set to be rolled out across the state.

The new digital meters, called ‘Smart Meters’, are set to replace all analogue electricity meters across Australia as part of a Federal Government initiative.

Installations are set to kick off in the Swan Hill area around September, but some members of the community are worried about possible health risks associated with the new energy meter equipment.

Sustainable Living in the Mallee (SliM) president Peta Thornton said between 40 and 50 people attended the first of two information sessions held by Powercor on Monday, to voice concerns over health effects and the possibility of increasing tariffs, or to simply gain a better understanding of the new policy.
