Searching for a Golden Cage – Film

In our increasingly interconnected world, technology feels inescapable. But what if the same devices that are supposed to make our lives easier were actually threatening our health?

A small but growing number of people suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, more commonly known as EHS. The condition causes people to feel sick in the presence of the electromagnetic waves that emanate from virtually all modern electronics.

Anything from a mobile phone tower to a wireless router to a refrigerator can trigger feelings of nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations and even rashes on the skin, according to the World Health Organization. People who say they suffer from EHS can feel sick merely from the presence of a nearby mobile phone. Prominent figures such as Gro Harlem Brundtland, former chair of WHO and prime minister of Norway, say they are electrosensitive.

People with more drastic symptoms have to seek out places far removed from technology. Green Bank, W. Va., for instance, is the location of the U.S. Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-square-mile area where many types of electromagnetic signals are banned because they could interfere with the world’s largest steerable radio telescope. It’s become the home of many who have essentially abandoned the modern world. With Wi-Fi and mobile phone coverage spreading further all the time, it may one day be their only place of refuge.

Former California Public Utilities Commission President condemns smart meters

Loretta Lynch, Former President of the California Public Utilities Commission, and one of California’s most influential Attorneys, criticised smart meters at Mountain View Wireless Summit.

Some of the points she made were:

  • The science is clear: EMFs affect health, particularly the most vulnerable among us.
  • Those living within 150 feet of power lines are at increased risk of serious disease
  • Utilities and telecommunications companies know these facts but obtain “obscenely obsessive profits” from this technology and are in a “desperate scramble” to set regulations in stone before public awareness increases and reforms are widely demanded.
  • Health and environmental costs from wireless tech are “externalized” to society at large
  • At this point, we are lucky if regulators are ignorant about this issue. More often they are co-opted and corrupted.
  • CPUC says “pay me and I’ll give you what you want” in secret backroom deals- a classic case of corruption and bribery, revealed in e-mails.
  • CPUC has become a “rogue agency” essentially controlled by corporations
  • CPUC has allowed utilities to cut corners, skip safety regulations, etc.
  • A parade of former CPUC Commissioners now work for the utilities- the so-called “revolving door.”
  • Utilities have entered the “big data” game and using and profiting from your private electric usage data. Protecting the privacy of our home has become harder and harder.

The truth about mobile phone and wireless radiation

The truth about mobile phone and wireless radiation: what we know, what we need to find out, and what you can do now

Presented by Dr Devra Davis, Visiting Professor of Medicine at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Ondokuz Mayis University, Turkey.

Video Lecture Link

The Lecture

What are the health effects of mobile phones and wireless radiation? While Australia has led the world in safety standards, including compulsory seat-belt legislation, plain packaging on cigarettes, and product and food disclosure legislation, it falls behind in addressing the significant issues associated with mobile phone use. In this Dean’s Lecture, epidemiologist and electromagnetic radiation expert, Dr Devra Davis, will outline the evolution of the mobile phone and smartphone, and provide a background to the current 19 year old radiation safety standards (SAR), policy developments and international legislation. New global studies on the health consequences of mobile/wireless radiation will be presented, including children’s exposure and risks.

The Speaker

Dr Devra Davis is an internationally recognised expert on electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and other wireless transmitting devices. She is currently the Visiting Professor of Medicine at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Ondokuz Mayis University, Turkey. Dr Davis was Founding Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute — the first institute of its kind in the world, to examine the environmental factors that contribute to the majority of cases of cancer.

Mobile phone masts removal decreases EHS symptoms

A Japanese study has demonstrated alleviation of electro-magnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) symptoms after removal of two mobile phone masts from the top of a block of residential units.

Two health surveys were conducted on residents of the towers, the first survey one month before commencement of decommisioning of the masts and the second survey nine months after both masts had ceased operating. The study is complicated by the fact that two mobile phone masts of differing strength were installed 10 years apart and then the masts were decommissioned 4 months apart. However, the timeline on page 6 of the report makes it easier to follow the sequence of events. Pages 9 and 10 list the EHS symptom abatement after removal of each of the masts.

The report is a little complicated and difficult to follow, but the symptom abatement pretty much speaks for itself.

Parent’s success in stopping WiFI installation at Australian school

An Australian mum has been successful in preventing installation of WiFi at her child’s school and has worked with the school in drafting EMR precautionary measures by requesting compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and Article 9: Accessibility from the Conventions on the Rights of the Disabled to accommodate her child’s functional impairment.

She stated “My child has a sensitivity to EMR, specifically WiFi and Bluetooth elicit symptoms.” The school environment was very good already, to change that by installing WiFi would exclude the child’s access to the school. The first step she took was to register a compliment/complaint/ feedback form on the NSW Dept of Education’s website she said. “I requested help to find a WiFi- free high school and stated my child’s health complaints and symptoms. Rather than sending an email which could get “lost” in the system, I chose to use the education department’s processes for registering my complaint regarding accessibility to schools.” Around the same time, the child’s school initiated the WiFi installation discussion again. This quickly led to further conversations with the school and district education officers covering both accessibility issues.

The mother stated “I read extensively regarding disability in education policy, on human rights and Electro Hypersensitivity where functional impairment and disability were the focus. I was particularly interested in the perspectives of Prof Olle Johansson and Dr Isaac Jamieson, in relation to disability, human rights and the built environment.”

Referring to General Comment No. 2 (2014) Article 9: Accessibility and cross referencing with the Disability Discrimination Act and Disability Standards for Education it became apparent that to override the hardwired system with WiFi could put the school and decision makers in a position of discriminating against the child’s right to education on an equal basis with other students as they would be preventing accessibility to the school.

Opportunity to ask ARPANSA questions about RF standards and exposure

On the 17th of November, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) will be hosting the bi-annual Electro Magnetic Energy Reference Group (EMERG) meeting. SSMA is a public representative and would like to hear from you, via comments to this web post, as to whether there are any burning questions (pun intended) that people may have regarding radiofrequencies (RF) exposure, RF standards and health.

If there is a large response from the public, questions will be collated and ARPANSA will be invited to respond in writing. Questions that are deemed of critical importance will be  raised directly face to face with ARPANSA at the meeting.

California’s Public Utilities Commission knew radio frequencies from smart meters affected people’s health

People who have become intolerant to electromagnetic fields (EMF) should be allowed to keep their electromechanical (analog) meter rather than be imposed a “smart” electronic (digital) meter emitting radiofrequencies (RFs), the former President of the the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) admitted in a 2010 email recently seized by authorities thanks to a search warrant. Michael Peevey’s email was sent to none other than Brian Cherry, Vice President of the big energy supplier Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), based in San Francisco. In January 2015, investigators from the Office of the California Attorney General seized their computers as part of a criminal investigation on possible collusion and corruption in the appointment of a judge favorable to a rate increase request generating PG&E $1.3 billion in extra revenues.

Since the beginning of their deployment in 2006 around the world, governments and water, gas and electric utilities have always claimed that smart meters posed no danger to public health. This despite thousands of complaints from users and doctors who reported a host of symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) which appeared or were aggravated after installation of these emitters of pulsed microwaves (read here testimonials submitted by Quebecers to the Régie de l’énergie). However, on 6 September 2010, Peevey wrote to Cherry : “There really are people who feel pain, etc., related to EMF, etc., and rather than have them becoming hysterical, etc., I would quietly leave them alone.”

At the beginning of his message, Peevey confided: “If it were my decision I would let anyone who wants to keep their old analog meter keep it, if they claim they suffer from EMF and/or related electronic-related illnesses and they can produce a doctor’s letter saying so (or expressing concern about the likelihood of suffering same). I would institute such a policy quitely and solely on an individual basis.”

Told about this confession, the President of the Association québécoise de lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique (Quebec Association Against Air Pollution or AQLPA), André Bélisle, “insistently demands once again that an independent public health inquiry be launched based on these new facts and revelations”.

But at the office of the Quebec Minister responsible for Public Health, Lucie Charlebois, nothing has changed. “Our position on smart meters remains the same,” said spokesperson Alexandra Bernier. She said the opt-out program offered by Hydro-Québec (featuring a non-communicating digital meter) is enough. Yet it does not help people living in apartment buildings close to several smart meters because they have to convince their neighbors to pay removal fees.

WHO partnership with electric utilities

Peevey’s admission about electrohypersensitivity was probably based on a well-informed source: an email dated September 15 2010 shows that the CPUC was advised by epidemiologist Leeka Kheifets, a professor of epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health in Los Angeles who serves on several international and national committees that advise governments on environmental policy, including the Scientific Expert Group of the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)”, according to her UCLA Web page. Dr Kheifets is most familiar with research on effects of EMFs on human health. “Prior to her professorship at UCLA, she was Head of the Radiation Studies Program at the World Health Organization and was a Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute, where she directed a multi-disciplinary electric and magnetic fields (EMF) research program”, her UCLA profile adds. Her public opinions, which minimize the health risks of EMFs, are responsible for most national public health advisories on EMFs, which parrot the arguments of electric utilities and wireless industries. “Of all the people I know, Leeka Kheifets has done more to subvert EMF research than anyone,” says American epidemiologist Samuel Milham, the first scientist to discover an increased risk of leukemia among electrical workers overexposed to EMFs. “In my book Dirty Electricity, on page 80 I describe how she prevented me from filtering a Palm Springs elementary school, and on p 91 how she prevented me from filtering the library building at University of California at San Diego. Both places had female breast cancer clusters. Lou Slesin has covered activity in great detail.” Dr. Kheifets did not respond to our emails and phone messages, nor did CPUC and PG&E officials.

While Dr Kheifets worked at WHO, her boss Mike Repacholi worked hand in hand with power companies, according to the editor of the highly regarded newsletter Microwave News, as was revealed in October 2005. Repacholi invited six of their representatives to assist Kheifets in drafting and editing WHO’s Monograph No. 238 Environmental Health Criteria on residential (60-Hertz) EMFs, published in 2007. Among the six international ‘observers’ invited was a Canadian, Dr. Michel Plante of Hydro-Québec. Since 1983, this family doctor is responsible for protecting public health as well as that of the electric utility’s employees. In recent years, he has also become a consultant for cellphone companies, for whom he has organized public talks on the safety of cell towers and also on the safety of smart meters and smart grids, in collaboration with Quebec’s Public Health authorities.

Seeking customer input on changes to network tariffs in NSW

Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy – the electricity distributor companies  that supply electricity to homes, businesses and community organisations in NSW (“the poles and wires”) – are asking people across the state about their views on what type of electricity tariffs electricity distributors will charge between 2017 – 2019.

Network tariffs charged by distributors make up about 40 per cent of the cost of electricity bills.

NSW electricity distributors must propose their 2017 – 2019 tariff structure statements to the Australian Energy Regulator in November this year.

The distributors have released an Issues Paper about their proposed tariffs.  See: Electricity tariff reform in NSW An invitation to comment

From the Issues Paper, it is obvious that customers want to keep their “inexpensive accumulation meters” and don’t want Time of Use (TOU) pricing (which require interval or smart meters).  For example, only 20 of Endeavour Energy’s 865,000 customers have opted so far for voluntary time of use tariffs!!

It’s in answers to the questions on TOU on Page 23 of the Issues Paper where people should raise their concerns about smart meters.

Written submissions close 9:00 am, Friday 30 October.

Information on how to submit your feedback can be found at the NSW Government website: Have your say
