Almost 90,000 refuse Smart Meters!

The media reported last week that “Almost 90,000 of the more than 900,000 customers approached by installers so far have turned them away.” That is a lot of people.

Please note this is just the statistics for Victoria, ………..so far.

What would happen if 10% of the rest of Australia also turn them away when the roll out continues to the other states?

Don’t think you are alone or give up the fight people. You are in very good company.

Smart meters and dumb MPs | Herald Sun

POLITICIANS just dont get it. People are sick and tired of their dumb decisions. Energy Minister Michael OBrien admits smart meters will cost a massive $2.3 billion, almost triple their original estimate, but says its too late to do anything about it. This latest example of a scandalous lack of foresight and planning by the former Labor government sits alongside the myki public transport ticketing system, which has blown out by hundreds of millions of dollars, and the Wonthaggi desalination plant, which will eventually cost Victorians $23 billion for water they may not need.

Smart meters here to stay | 3AW

Dean Mighell, head of Victoria’s peak electricity union says he still won’t be having a smart meter installed despite today’s announcement.

Mighell is one of many outraged this morning to learn Premier Ted Baillieu will not stop the highly controversial roll out of his fundamentally flawed smart meters.

A review has found too much money has already been spent to wind back the project.  Up to 2 billion dollars worth has been shed, which is nearly triple the original budget.

However, the review still finds that consumers will eventually benefit from smart meter installation.

Almost a million of the meters have been installed so far.

Also, 3AW Mornings Presenters Justin Smith and Nick McCallum slammed Premier Ted Baillieu for not honestly addressing public concern and outcry about the roll out.

Justin was adamant the Baillieu government’s review was purely for political reasons.

“We’ve been absolutely and totally conned by Ted Baillieu.  The government had absolutely no intention of issuing a stop to the program when they called for a review,” Justin Smith said.

Incompetence by both parties. Conned by the “Top end of Town” who won the game when they bought off our public assets in the first place. Remember the line, this was all in the name of competition and lowering costs. THAT WAS THE GREATEST CON OF ALL. This is the kind of thing that happens in a dictatorship or communist regime. Watch as ordinary Victorians go to the wall as electricity prices escalate once the dust has settled and watch as the money goes offshore to improve the living standards of those foreign interests that now own WHAT ONCE WAS OURS. OUR POLITICIANS ARE WORTHLESS, CAPABLE OF ONLY PLAYING THEIR PATHETIC SILLY GAMES WHILE THEY SELL US OFF. THE WORST IS YET TO COME.

Victorias electricity smart meters here to stay | Herald Sun

A Baillieu government audit has concluded smart meters will help households control their energy use and ease some pain from soaring power bills in the future.

THE $2.18 billion roll-out of Victorias electricity smart meters will go ahead because too much money has been spent to pull back.

About 950,000 meters have been installed – almost half of all households and small businesses across the state. The Herald Sun has learned a final review recommends the roll-out continue, despite cost blowouts, and that consumers will win from potential benefits.

Should the Government scrap smart meters? Have your say below.

The projects original $800 million budget has almost tripled since the former Labor government ordered all homes and small businesses be fitted with the devices by the end of 2013.

The project also has been dogged by billing bungles and health, privacy and safety concerns.

But a Baillieu government audit has concluded the meters will help households control their energy use and ease some pain from soaring power bills in the future.

Smart meters will allow companies to charge higher prices in peak periods and discount when demand is low.

Those who maximise the use of cheaper rates, such as using washing machines in off-peak times, are likely to benefit most.

But consumer advocate Gavin Dufty said the smart meter program had been a “runaway train and a wreck waiting to happen”.

“It still has that much speed that the Government is not in a position to pull out of it,” he said.

Industry sources confirmed the meters were here to stay.

The audit also promotes the use of in-house displays, which feed information about energy use throughout the day and help guide consumers on how to reduce consumption.

Premier Ted Baillieu would not be drawn on the findings of the review, saying the programs fate would be announced soon. Smart meters record power consumption every half hour.

The meters can be read remotely, ending the need for manual reads. They can also remotely disconnect and reconnect power, and will be able to cycle appliances such as airconditioners on and off.

A scathing auditor-generals report released two years ago said the program was “flawed and a failure”, the financial benefits flowing to power companies rather than consumers.

Victorias energy regulator, the Essential Services Commission, first forecast a roll-out of the meters in July, 2004. At the time, it was estimated the meters would cost customers a few dollars each year.

Instead, Energy Minister Michael OBrien has warned the charge could be $900 over 15 to 20 years.collierk@heraldsun.com.au

Flawed meters a dumb idea | Herald Sun

GEORGE Lawson says the only thing he has got out of having a smart meter is a bigger bill.

Since one of the units was installed at his Canterbury home in February last year, his supply charges have jumped by about $30 a quarter.

“I am not seeing any benefits at all,” Mr Lawson said. “All I can see on my account is that the charges have increased substantially.”

The 68-year-old and wife Eileen had no idea they could refuse to have the meter installed.

Mr Lawson said even the meter reader labelled the hi-tech system “shambolic”, saying the devices didn’t work.

“No one really knows what everything is all about,” Mr Lawson said. “I do not think they are smart.”
