IARC Publishes Rationale for RF as Possible Human Carcinogen

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has recently released (this month) the rationale for its decision to designate RF radiation as a Group 2B possible human cancer causing agent. Although the studies that were used to support this classification related to mobile phones, the monograph was extended to apply to other types of wireless emitting devices which include smart meters.

“The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has released its detailed evaluation of the cancer risks associated with RF radiation, which serves as the rationale for designating RF as a possible human carcinogen.

The IARC monograph comes close to two years after an invited panel of experts from 14 countries reached this conclusion following an eight-day meeting at IARC headquarters in Lyon, France (see Microwave News original report).

An electronic copy of the 430-page document is available at no cost from IARC. A paper copy will be available soon.

The basis for IARC designation of RF as a Class 2B carcinogen is summed up in one sentence: ‘Positive associations have been observed between exposure to radiofrequency radiation from wireless phones and glioma and acoustic neuroma’ (p.421). Those associations with brain tumors and tumors of the acoustic nerve were observed by the Interphone study group and Lennart Hardell’s team in Sweden.

The panel’s decision was close to unanimous. One strong dissent came from Peter Inskip of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, who walked out of the IARC meeting before the final vote. One or two others, including Maria Blettner of the University of Mainz in Germany, were reported to have also disagreed with the majority opinion. There was talk that the dissenters would file a minority opinion, but no signed statement appears in the IARC monograph. Instead, their view is included in the final paragraph of the report: The available evidence does not support a “conclusion about a causal association” due to ‘inconsistencies’ between the Interphone and Hardell studies and the lack of an exposure-response relationship.

The dissenters also point to a lack of association in a large Danish study —though this effort has been widely criticized (see Microwave New’s take). Finally, the dissenters argue that, ‘up to now, reported time trends in incidence rates of glioma have not shown a trend parallel to time trends in mobile-phone use.’ That last argument was punctured in November when the Danish Cancer Society reported a spike in aggressive brain tumors over the last ten years. At the time, an insider called the increase a ‘frightening development’, though no link to cell phones was made.”

    Pam, from a previous post……….

EPA Says “the Threat Is Real”. By 1990, over one hundred studies had been conducted worldwide. Of these, at least two dozen epidemiological studies on humans indicated a link between EMFs and serious health problems. In response to public pressure, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began reviewing and evaluating the available literature.
In a draft report issued in March 1990, the EPA recommended that EMFs be classified as a Class B carcinogen — a “PROBABLE human carcinogen and joined the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs”.
After the EPA draft report was released, utility, military and computer LOBBYISTS came down hard on the EPA. The EPA’s final revision did NOT classify EMFs as a Class B carcinogen Rather, the following explanation was added: “At this time such a characterization regarding the link between cancer and exposure to EMFs is not appropriate because the basic nature of the interaction between EMFs and biological processes leading to cancer is not understood.”

Despite the “probable” carcinogenicity being recognised, “possible” is actually the lobbyist’s classification

Eric – Thanks for your informative Comment. Do we have anything in Aussie like they do in Florida, where someone can come out and test the EMR around my home? As you are aware I don’t have a SMART METER and never will. Boxed locked etc etc. However I am surrounded by the darn things. My account due 29/5 so have been taking readings, just in case I get an estimated bill (only had one so far). ….. Cheers Pam:-)

      • Eric says:

Pam, that service does exist. I’m not sure what’s available in Warnambool though. Some people doing that service in Melbourne charge an arm and a leg for it. What you can do is what may of us have done and purchased their own emr measuring instrument and do it themselves. Most who do this first do a little research on which instrument to buy. There are instruments for home use and then there are professional measuring instruments which go up in price. Even with a basic instrument and some determination and practice you can get quite good at understanding what is going on around you. If you weren’t so far away Pam I’d gladly come over and do what I could to assist you with emr readings, complimentary. The furtherest west I have gotten over the last 3 decades is just past Colac.

Eric Thanks for that – I am asset rich and penny poor and only on a Pension. As you know I have employed a Solicitor to act for me and still haven’t paid him yet. My Healtrh is not good. My hip has now gone on me and Xrays for them Friday. Physio every second day. What type of shop would have something suitable for me??? and roughly the Cost. If we are talking Hundred of dollars I just could not possibly afford one. Rest assured I will never have a Smart Meter installed at any price. No Power Bill yet, but I am still taking readings. I truly believe we will WIN, we just have to be patient…………Pam

      • Brenn says:

Hi Pam—where are you? I am prepared to test with my RF meter local to my area. I only make a minimal charge to cover travel. Cheers Brenn

        • Pam says:

Brenn – Warnambool – Thanks – but it would have to be in a month’s time. I don’t like putting my phone no or email on here. Can you let me know your email or phone number please…………..Cheers Pam 🙂

When are they going to alter the word “Possible” to “Probable” or even better, acknowledge that all this wireless technology including Smart Meters is a cause of Cancer in Humans. There is far too much dilly-dallying going on at the moment. What are they trying to Hide??? . Look forward to other Comments…………………..Pam

    • Rik says:

“What are they trying to hide???” They are trying to hide the fact it causes cancer but they make lots of money from it. If everyone knew it caused cancer all the phone companies would go broke as nobody would buy mobile phones. The phone companies would also go broke as we would find other means of communication so the big companies would go broke and thats who these guys work for that are against telling the truth.

They really need to do some research and find what causes cancer and avoid it. They probably can make a mobile phone that doesnt cause cancer if they tried but it would probably cost that extra $5 to make so they dont want to spend that extra money instead they just release what they have and dont care on the health of people. The amount of people that get these cancers is a lot lower than the population so there are a lot more people that will still buy these devices and the companies will still make lots of money.

These days its all about money and less on health. If it was all about health then the health systems will all be free and there would be little wait times for operations and there would be a lot more healthy people walking around instead of the waiting rooms full of people waiting for years and a lot of sick people walking around that cant afford to get healed.

      • Pam says:

Rik – I have a mobile phone, but not a Smart Phone and only use it for Messages, calls and taking a few photos of my Grandkids. Young people use them like they are an attachment to their bodies which is worrying. I really do not know where it is all going to end. Guess we will just have to be patient and never give in. Cheers Pam 🙂

Obviously those who dissent from the truth, that Microwave Radiation is the cause of Type 2B Carcinogens, have an axe to grind, which is Total Suppression of the now Frightening Truth. Obviously THEY HAVE BEEN BOUGHT by the Microwave Industry ie. the Microwave Radio Manufacturers of Mobile Phones and Receiving and Broadcasting Microwave Sending and Receiving Equipment and the manufacturers of Microwave Smart Meters etc. These people are only interested in MONETARY PROFIT before any Duty Of Care towards the public who they regard simply as CASH COWS. The sooner this Wicked Health Ruining Microwave Industry is exposed to the Worlds Public, that is….. that the public get educated to the Truth as to how Deadly Dangerous this Type 2B Carcinogen Industry is to Human Life and all forms of Life from all Microwave Devices the better for all Mankind. But how many people, especially young Children are going to inherit ever more forms of Cancers from this Recalcitrant and Money Grubbing Evil Industry is alarming to think of !

    • Sharron says:

Yes, and they have become very addicted to all the wireless forms of technology, not unlike smokers who became addicted to cigarettes, Evil indeed!
